Sunday July 4, 2004

Today we leave Yellowstone to go to Cody, WY.  On the way out the east entrance, we see a bear cub digging in the hillside for grubs.  Yet another animal jam J.  We arrive in Cody to a slight drizzle, more rain had followed us outside the park.  Just after we checked into the motel, a hard rain fell for about 10 minutes.  Then it cleared some and we saw a fest going on right across the street.  Umbrellas in hand we wandered over to see what the vendors were selling.  I picked up some horseshoe stands for making beer can chicken on the grill.  Balance a chicken on a mostly full beer can and cook over indirect heat for about 2.5 hours – easy grilling and good eating!  One for Dad, one for my brother (oldest bro Scott lent me his DVD Camcorder for the trip) and one for me.  After wandering amongst all the vendor booths we headed back up the street to check out the various shops.  There was a saddlery store that had some of the most expensive saddle and tack ever made.  It was a black saddle with some $30,000 worth of silver and gold trim all over.  There were matching gloves and chaps too.  Finally we wound back to the rooms to rest up a little before going to the Cody Stampede Rodeo.  This was finals day for the Stampede, with loads of prize money going to the winners of each event.  We followed the traffic jam into the arena parking lot and made our way inside.   Now Cody is all about rodeo – from Memorial Day to Labor Day, there is a Rodeo every night.  ESPN has live coverage; this is the place for wrangling.  We saw lots of good rides; the rodeo clowns were great too.

"I can't use this rope no more"

"Well why not?"

"There's 'stuff' on it"

"Stuff?"

"You know, yesterday's pasture"  Classic!  After the rodeo we tried to get into a sit-down restaurant for dinner.  The three places we looked all had at least an hour wait.  We ended up at Taco John's, the western version of Taco Bell.  Not bad, but not quite what we were looking for on the fourth of July.  We watched fireworks near Riverside Park – a decent display; it ran close to 40 minutes.  If only I know how to use the manual focus on the camcorder, the video would have been much clearer.  Next time…
