Wisconsin - the rolling hills of our favorite cheese state.  Alpine Valley for the Jimmy Buffett concert.  A nice, laid-back way to end the trip.........

We stayed at the Interlaken Resort near Lake Geneva.  Pretty nice place, lots of parrotheads there for the show too.  The concert was great, this was the last show on this leg of the tour.  Again, we left the camera in the car, expecting the worst from the Alpine Valley security.  Again, we could have brought it along with no issues.  Next time....

The parking lot was one giant tailgate party - folks barbequing, mixing up margaritas in gas-powered blenders and generally partying down.  Jimmy had a great time on stage, covering all the Buffett standards and also "Southern Cross" by Crosby Stills & Nash.

We started the day lazy, and after our spa massages we hung out by the pool before leaving for the concert.  The scene at Alpine Valley was extraordinary: a complete turnaround from the humourless vast gravel and asphalt lots of the Tweeter Center in Tinley Park.  Alpine Valley was rocking and when we arrived the party seemed to be a full tilt.  We were directed into the west lot, and everywhere there were people tailgating, mixing margaritas, blasting Jimmy Buffett music and imbibing (and inhaling) any number of controlled substances.  Raucous, rollicking, and reeling with crowd energy – what a big concert event should be.  We were constantly asked as we walked to the front gates "Hey, spare any tickets?"  Next time, we'll stay online to get two pair of tickets!  After we breezed through security we got wristbands that identified us as able to drink and I got in line for to buy margaritas while Karen attempted to get a t-shirt.  Two drinks (and $28 later – grumble grumble grumble) Karen came back after giving up on the shirt line.  The crowd was just too big.  We found our seats in row T at the far left side of the stage and waited for the show to begin.  Jimmy Buffett puts on a great show!  He had at least ten other musicians, singers and dancers on stage.  The band has great chops, and kept the show in fine form.  One of the highlights was Buffett's tribute to Prince, as their tours had crossed paths a few times this summer.  He swung into the "Buffettized" version of "Purple Rain".  Very funny, and a great choice to add to the show.  I especially like the cover of Crosby Stills & Nash's "Southern Cross".  Makes sense that the son of a son of a sailor would include it in the setlist.  The encore included "Fins" and featured a giant airborne shark floating out over the audience.  The sight of 45,000 fans holding their arms above their heads singing "Fins to the left of me, fins to the right and you're the only bait in town" was just too much.  We waited in the pavilion seats until security told us to leave after the show.  No sense in trying to outrun the crowd that was streaming out of the theater.  We worked our way back to the car and got on the road within ten minutes.  Kudos to the Wisconsin state police and the Alpine Valley staff who have their act together on traffic control – leaving was a smooth and efficient process.  We were back to the Interlaken resort before midnight, a happy surprise.
